Add Colin Kaepernick's name to a growing list of pro athletes protesting against what they believe are injustices being committed against people of color by rogue police officers in the United States.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback refused to stand during the the national anthem before his team's preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Friday, August 26.
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick told NFL.com's Steve Wyche after the game. "To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder. This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. ... If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right."
The 49ers issued a statement Friday night: “The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony. It is an opportunity to honor our country and reflect on the great liberties we are afforded as its citizens. In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem."
The NFL also released a statement: "Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem."
Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and LeBron James spoke out against racial profiling and said this country's "broken system" needed to be fixed, last month during a speech at the ESPYs
They pledged to use their resources to help urban communities.

The first time I saw the Delorean in the 1985 film Back To The Future I was positive it was the coolest car I’d ever seen. That metallic finish and butterfly doors were features I never saw being outdone—until now.
After first teasing a glimpse on their Instagram yesterday, Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled what they are calling Vision Mercedes Maybach 6, expected to appear tomorrow at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
Besides the sleek aerodynamics and rich engineering, this Mercedes Maybach release is significant because it’s the first since December of 2012 after discontinuing the car series.
As you can see from the visuals the Maybach team decided to go with an all-red finish, giving it a candy paint job for the ages. But the design is sexy and futuristic, making it both chic and simplistic.
We would like to congratulate Lafayette as he continues to do his thing in this now weirdo world of Hip Hop.
It has been reported that the 30 + year old music ingenious, longtime student of the game will continue breathing fresh air into this now feminine movement of rap culture.

Earlier this month at Rucker Park, two legendary New York rappers made an appearance to promote the release of the Allen Iverson x Reebok Question “EBC” and the “A5″ presented by Footaction.
Jadakiss and Cam’ron were on hand to help and coach basketball teams rivaling against each other at the famous court in Harlem.
Rucker Park is a basketball court in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, at 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard across the street from the former Polo Grounds site. Many who’ve played at the park in the Rucker Tournament achieved a level of fame for their abilities, and several have gone on to play in the NBA.
Killa Cam’s squad—including Ron Artest—rocked the Reebok “EBC”, which commemorated the 20th anniversary of Allen Iverson playing at Rucker Park shortly after being drafted to the NBA in 1996. Iverson teamed up with Coney Island native Stephon Marbury to suit up for Diddy’s squad.
Some sizes of the shoes are still available on Reebok’s website for the exclusive kicks released on August 5th. Jada’s team was laced up in the Reebok A5, which was designed by Jada himself and inspired by the Reebok commercials he did back in the day with Iverson.
Iverson played for 14 seasons in the NBA. He played both shooting guard and point guard positions, and was an eleven-time NBA All-Star, won the All-Star game MVP award in 2001 and 2005, and was the NBA’s MVP in 2001. Before retiring in 2013, Iverson teamed up with Reebok to launch his shoe that now have become widely popular.
Iverson’s different fashion style and cultural influences he had in the game helped with the creation of his shoes.
In 2001, Iverson teamed up with hip-hop artist Jadakiss to help with the release of his 5th model of the Reebok ‘Answer’ with an iconic commercial. 15 years later, they’re back again.
